The Hastings District Water Trail Tour
When you turn on your tap, the water you receive has been on an amazing journey.
The Hastings District Water Supply, its infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology, has been recognised nationally and is among the most innovative systems of its kind in the country.
Hastings residents are invited to see first-hand the amazing technology used to deliver quality drinking water to their homes by joining a free Port Macquarie-Hastings District Water Supply Tour.
The tours are a great opportunity for residents to see exactly where their water comes from and the infrastructure that has been built to deliver it.
The highlight of the tour is a visit to Cowarra Dam. The 10,000 megalitre Cowarra Off-Creek Storage Dam near Wauchope was an important milestone in creating a more drought-secure future for the region and a sustainable water management system. Cowarra Dam supplements the 2500 megalitre Port Macquarie Dam during times of low river flow and drought.
The tour also includes a brief history of the dam's construction, the cultural and environmental links and viewing of indigenous art around the picnic area.
Participants will also have the opportunity to visit Koree Island Pumping Station, Wauchope Water Treatment Plant, Port Macquarie Dam and the Port Macquarie Reclaimed Water Treatment Plant.
Since its completion in 2001, more than 10,000 people have enjoyed a tour of the Hastings Water Trail.
Tours for 2009 will be held once a month on a Saturday. Dates for the remainder of the year are - August 8, September 19, October 10 and November 14.
Participants will board the bus at the Player's Theatre carpark behind the Council building in Burrawan Street at 8.30am and return at 1pm.
