Community Profile - Population and Demographics
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has made available a new interactive social and demographic profile database, which will assist with decision making and planning for both the community and Council.
Council purchased the products from Informed Decisions (i.d.), demographic and census data experts who understand public policy and local government decision-making. The databases provide raw data covering social research, geography, economics, urban and housing analysis for our region.
Community Profile
This database provides census information about our local area. This census data is updated as information is released by the ABS and can be easily incorporated into planning documents, presentations, community analysis and funding applications.

Employment & Population Facts
Employment has been growing by an average of 4% per annum over the last 15 years. During this time population has increased by an average of 1.5% per year. This has meant that unemployment as a share of population has increased considerably and the area has the lowest unemployment in the region which is generally below that of NSW as a whole. This is considered a very good performance. There were 3,430 jobs created between the 2001-2006 census period. This equates to about 2 jobs per day in a LGA growing at around 3.3 persons per day.
There is a low proportion of the population in the 20 to 34 age groups, particularly males. The share of employment to population is also low relative to NSW reflecting the higher proportion of retirees in the population.

Popular Service Industries in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Region
Retailing, restaurants, accommodation and property services are highly developed service industries in the Port Macquarie-Hastings. They are likely to continue to grow in tune with population and visitor growth. Faster growth may be achieved in some other areas of business services (meeting the needs of businesses for accounting, marketing, information technology and related services) and in financial and investment services for retirees and those nearing retirement.
Despite this, there is a substantial net deficit of service jobs in Port Macquarie-Hastings. Several thousand additional jobs would exist if the Port Macquarie-Hastings service sector industries were serving the same number of residents.
