Free Writing On Water Workshops
Tuesday, July 31, 2007
Water - you drink, bathe and play in it, now it's time to put pen to paper and write about it.
Two free community workshops will be held this week for budding authors with something special to say about our most precious resource.
Writing on Water Workshops will be held at the Port Macquarie Library on:
- Friday, August 3 between 3pm and 5pm
- Saturday, August 4 between 10am and 12 noon (school students only)
The Friday session is open to adult members of the public, while Saturday's workshop is designed for young people and school students.
Both workshops provide an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to produce an entry for this year's Osmosis Photography and Writing competition.
The annual competition, held in the lead-up to National Water Week in October, encourages entrants of all ages and ability to creatively explore the journey of water. This year, the theme is 'Watershed'.
Osmosis co-ordinator, Krissa Wilkinson, said this year's competition will focus on the world's changing attitude toward water conservation.
"The theme of Watershed has two distinct meanings. In a geographical sense, we know that each catchment is separated topographically from adjacent basins by a ridge, hill or mountain which is known as a water divide, or watershed.
"It is also appropriate as it reflects the significant shift, or change of course, in our attitude to water and how we use it."
This year, photographers, poets and songwriters are invited to submit creative and imaginative pieces that promote water as a life-giving resource and encourage awareness of water collection, consumption, conservation, recycling and reclamation.
Entry forms are available from all Council offices and libraries. Entries close, Friday, August 10.
All entries will be exhibited at Port Macquarie Library from August 14-24 with judges to award more than $1700 in prize money in 11 categories.
The official 2008 Osmosis Watershed Calendar, featuring a selection of this year's entries, will be launched during Water Week in October.
All money raised from the sale of the calendars is donated to WaterAid Australia for clean water projects in developing countries. This year, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council donated $2300 to WaterAid through the sale of the Osmosis calendar.
The Osmosis event, now in its fifth year, is proudly supported and acknowledged by the United Nations.
