Lake Cathie to Be Opened

Monday, 28 April 2008

Lake Cathie will be opened to the sea later this week after more than 190 millimetres of rain fell in the area over four days.

With the level of the lake currently recorded this morning at 1.69 metres and more run-off expected this week, Council has decided to open the lake on Wednesday or Thursday, subject to excavation machinery being available.

Council's Environmental Engineer, Gordon Cameron said, "The water level of the lake has exceeded Council's Lake Opening Strategy so we have decided to open the lake.

"It is anticipated to open the lake on the high tide around 5pm on Wednesday or Thursday. Until then we will continue to monitor the situation.

"There is still a lot of water over the path around the lake and I advise residents to be careful when walking near the lake edge, Mr Cameron said.
