Everything Old Is New Again During Recycling Week
Friday, 6 November 2009
During this year's National Recycling Week (November 9th to 15th) Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in conjunction with Planet Ark is encouraging the community to reuse useful items rather than put them in the rubbish.
Council's Waste Strategies & Education Officer, Nicky Julian said, "There are some excellent examples within our local community of recycling and reuse.
"In addition to keeping quality resources in use and materials out of landfill, reusing items is something all residents can do to save water and energy, and reduce carbon emissions.
"People are incredibly resourceful and creative - it's particularly inspiring to see the environmental projects at some of our local schools."
"Children from Kendall pre-school are very concerned about the impact beach litter has on our marine environment. They have undertaken a number of investigations to find out more and raise this concern with the community, submitting a letter to the editor for the local paper and working with Council on beach signage ideas.
"The children have been collecting sea litter from the local beaches, which is now being used to create sculptures for the RUMBA- Recycled Art Competition.
Andrew Bagnall from Kendall pre-school said, "The children have been very interested in the different kinds of litter we have collected and this is demonstrated in the thought and effort they have put into their art designs."
Nicky Julian said, "Over 9607 tonnes of bottles, cans, paper and other mixed recyclables were sent to be made into new items from the Port Macquarie-Hastings area in the last year. The key is now to build on this success and look for other ways to recycle and reuse at home and at work to reduce waste," Ms Julian said.
Printer cartridges and mobile phones can also be recycled at Australia Post outlets through MobileMuster and the Cartridges 4 Planet Ark program.
