ECONOMIC PROFILE
Council frequently receives enquiries from potential investors and business people seeking economic and demographic information. To assist with these enquiries, Council has compiled a range of economic and population data in the following webpages above.
The Local Economy
The Port Macquarie-Hastings economy is growing rapidly. Most is being generated in the services sector through changing consumer needs and population growth. The Port Macquarie-Hastings is also a popular visitor destination.
The economy is unusual in that there is no dominant industry. It appears to have completed its transition from one dominated by primary industry to a service-based economy driven by the needs of its residents and visitors.
The economy is also becoming more diversified although there has only been a slow increase since 1996 compared with rapid diversification experienced during the early 1980s. This trend is consistent with a maturing economy. Developments in education, health, horticulture, manufacturing (particularly dairy and wood products) food processing, electronics and in some areas of business services are likely to add further depth and diversity to the economy and provide the basis for expansion into new markets beyond the Port Macquarie-Hastings region.
Primary industries and their processing remain comparatively important. Significantly, the structural adjustments occurring in these industries appear to have run their course. Further growth in this sector is likely to be centred on intensive horticultural production, subject to access to suitable land and water.
