Road Safety
Significant Community Benefits
The implementation of the Road Safety Officer Program within the Hastings has had significant community benefits in highlighting and addressing road safety issues throughout the Hastings Local Government Area.
The Hastings Council will continue to develop road safety strategies that provide increasing effectiveness in targeting and improving the safety of its road network.
Role of the Road Safety Officer
- To develop community road safety programs based on local crash statistics and expressed community needs. Implement programs with the primary aim of reducing road trauma in the Hastings.
- Improve safety outside schools, through the investigation of school environments and the initiation of engineering/behavioural measures capable of reducing general traffic or parking problems.
- Work with relevant community groups to develop road safety goals and programs. The programs would encourage greater adherence to pedestrian safety laws, increased usage of seat belts and child restraints, awareness of speeding, fatigue, drink walking and drink driving.
- Increase awareness amongst residents, community groups, government agencies and other key stakeholders in the Local Government Area as to the extent of the local crash problems and respond with local community road safety initiatives.
- Assist the Police in publicising local enforcement operations and work co-operatively during local programs.
- Seek funding assistance for road safety programs or initiatives.
- Attend meetings of the Local Traffic Committee and the Hastings Road Safety Working Group.
- Liaise with other community based safety officers and agencies including Health, Police and Education.
- Seek funding for and continue implementation of the Hastings Road Safety Strategy.
