Lifeguards maintain watch over beaches this Easter

Bumper crowds have enjoyed first weekend of the Easter holidays with more than 2000 people a day flocking to local beaches.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Senior Lifeguard Grant Hudson again implored beachgoers to remember the basics when heading to the beach after a number of rescues have already taken place.

"Since the start of the Qld school holidays our Lifeguards have rescued 22 people at Town Beach alone, with 10 of these rescues occurring on Good Friday and Easter Saturday," Mr Hudson said.

"It is very important for all beach users to remember the basics when heading to the beach these holidays - "No Flags, No Swim", listen to lifeguards and surf lifesavers, read and follow the signs and always listen to the instructions."

With so many people venturing to the region's beaches lifeguards have maintained a water's edge patrol during busy periods, helping to limit the number of people drifting outside of flagged areas and allowing a fast reaction time for potential rescue efforts.

Mr Hudson praised the efforts of the lifeguards in keeping the beaches safe during the Easter break and educating swimmers of conditions.

"If people are ever in doubt about conditions when using one of our beautiful beaches in the Port Macquarie Hastings area, they should ask a lifeguard or surf lifesaver for advice," Mr Hudson said.

A large swell at Flynns Beach has also kept surf lifesavers busy with many venturing to the popular surf spot.

"Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club Volunteers performed numerous rescues and preventative actions over the Easter break due to the size of the easterly swell and strong currents," Mr Hudson said.

"Our job is to ensure we are constantly monitoring the beach and as conditions can change quickly we are trained to assist people on what those current conditions are and what to be mindful of."
